Make the better option the lazy option: a ten-minute kitchen reset

This week, less a recipe, more a setup. Spend ten minutes turning your kitchen into a place that quietly does the right thing for you, even on the days you do not feel like helping yourself.

It is the single best return on time in your week.

The principle

Every choice in a kitchen has friction. The lower the friction, the more likely the choice. If the apples are buried in the bottom drawer of the fridge and the biscuits are on the bench, you will eat the biscuits. Not because you lack willpower. Because biscuits are in the way and apples are not.

Move the biscuits. Move the apples.

The ten-minute reset

Do this once a week, ideally after the shopping comes home.

  • Wash and chop one or two vegetables you would eat raw. Carrots, capsicum, cucumber, celery. Put them in a clear container at the front of the fridge
  • Boil six eggs. Cool, peel, store in the fridge. There is your snack for the next three days
  • Move the fruit bowl to where you actually stand. Next to the kettle, on the kitchen island, wherever your feet land
  • Decant nuts and seeds into a small jar on the bench. Out of the pantry, into the line of sight
  • Pre-portion the things you tend to overdo. Crisps, biscuits, chocolate. Smaller packets, not the family bag
  • Tip a tin of beans or chickpeas into a jar in the fridge, ready to throw into salads or eggs

What this is not

This is not meal prep. You are not cooking elaborate Sunday batches. You are not creating fourteen identical Tupperware containers. You are not on a regime.

You are just removing friction from the better choices and adding a tiny amount of friction to the worse ones. That is it.

Why this works when willpower does not

The reset takes about ten minutes. It saves you dozens of small acts of willpower across the week. By Thursday, when the day has gone sideways and you are standing in front of an open fridge at 4pm, your past self has already done the work.

Your future self thanks her every time.

The takeaway: spend ten minutes a week setting your kitchen up so the better option is the lazy option. Wash and chop. Boil eggs. Move the fruit bowl. Remove the friction from the choices you want to make. That is the whole game.
