Plant variety is one of the best things you can do for your gut. But “eat more plants” can feel like one more job in an already full week.
Here's a shortcut.
A single tablespoon of mixed seeds gives you four or five different plants in one go. Linseed, pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, chia. Each one is a different plant, feeding a different part of your gut.
Why seeds, specifically
It isn't only about variety. That one spoonful also brings omega-3 fats, particularly from linseed and chia. It brings magnesium, which a lot of women run low on. It brings zinc, for immune and skin health. And it brings a quiet amount of fibre, without you having to think about it.
For one tablespoon, that's a lot of work done.
How to make it stick
The trick with any small habit is to attach it to something you already do.
Keep a jar of mixed seeds in the fridge; next to the milk or a visible shelf. Sprinkle a spoonful over whatever you're already eating: yoghurt, porridge, eggs, toast, a salad, a bowl of soup. It doesn't need its own moment. It just rides along with an existing one.
One note: keep the jar in the fridge. Seeds are rich in oils, and the fridge keeps them fresh and tasting good.
You can buy a ready-made mix, or jar your own from whatever's in the cupboard. Either is fine. The best mix is the one you'll actually use.
The takeaway: a tablespoon of mixed seeds a day adds four or five plants, plus omega-3s, magnesium and zinc. Keep the jar somewhere you'll see it, and add a spoonful to something you already eat.
