Magnesium is having a moment. It is being sold as the answer to sleep, stress, anxiety, cramps, and just about everything in between. Some of that is fair. A lot of it runs well ahead of the evidence. Here is the honest picture, and why it still ends with most women needing to pay attention to their magnesium.
What magnesium actually does
Magnesium is a cofactor for hundreds of enzyme systems in the body. That is not marketing language, it is basic biochemistry. It regulates muscle contraction and relaxation, supports nerve signalling, and drives the reactions that turn the food you eat into usable energy. Around 60 per cent of the magnesium in your body is stored in your bones, where it works alongside calcium and vitamin D to maintain bone strength.
These are not dramatic, feel-it-today effects. They are core functions running in the background, every day, and they depend on you having enough magnesium to support them. That is the real case for magnesium, and it is a strong one. It does not need embellishment.
The anxiety claim, examined honestly
Anxiety is the headline you see most, so it is worth looking at closely.
The better-quality trials do point in a consistent direction: magnesium can reduce subjective feelings of anxiety. But the effect concentrates in people who are already deficient or otherwise vulnerable. Correct a genuine shortfall, and you may feel a real difference. Add magnesium on top of an already adequate level, and any benefit is likely to fall away.
This is the pattern across almost all of the nutrient research, and it is worth internalising because it applies to far more than magnesium. Nutrients resolve the problems caused by not having enough of them. They are not drugs, and more is not better once your needs are met. Magnesium is not a sedative. Taken beyond an adequate level, its calming reputation has little solid evidence behind it, and some of what people report is likely the ordinary placebo response that shows up strongly in studies of subjective symptoms.
None of this makes magnesium unimportant. It makes it specific. The question is not whether magnesium is a miracle for anxiety. It is whether you are getting enough in the first place.
And a lot of women are not
This is where it gets practical. On national figures, around one in three Australian women do not get enough magnesium to meet their estimated average requirement. Not a rare deficiency in a small group, but a shortfall in intake across a third of women.
The reason is not mysterious. The richest sources of magnesium, leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and wholegrains, are exactly the foods that slip when life gets busy. Magnesium is not found in the convenient, quick, ultra-processed foods that fill the gaps on a hard week. So the shortfall tends to track with the same pattern of eating that leaves a lot of nutritional gaps.
The emerging gut story
There is one newer thread worth watching, because it is genuinely interesting and because it reinforces the same point.
Magnesium appears to shape the composition of the gut microbiome, and the microbiome communicates with the brain through what is often called the gut-brain axis. In early studies, largely in animal models so far, magnesium deficiency changes that signalling in ways linked to low mood. The research is at an early stage and should be read as emerging rather than established. But it is a useful reminder that these systems are connected, and that feeding your body well supports far more than any single symptom you could name.
The takeaway: Magnesium runs hundreds of core processes, from muscle and nerve function to energy and bone strength. Its benefits for anxiety are real but specific, concentrated in people who are low to begin with, not a treatment for everyone. Around one in three Australian women fall short on intake. The goal is not to chase magnesium for one symptom, but to maintain a level that keeps all of these systems running.
